stop sharing butterfly dreams w/ caterpillar minds
“The job market is tough, there are no jobs.” “For YOU”.
‘It is nearly impossible to do that.” “For YOU”
Stop sharing butterfly dreams with caterpillar minds.
I was once told that it would be nearly impossible to get a six figure job as my first job out of college, yet I did that. Then, I was told I would not get a job in finance because I am a Black woman, I did that and I excelled. At the time that I resigned from my role, I was positioned to earn my first investment banking prospect (a ~$300M total potential deal size) as an ANALYST. I was told that if I were to ask my property manager for a discount on my rent “just because”, they would only laugh in my face. And then my property manager decreased my rent in my luxury high rise by $200. And finally, in early August 2024 when I said that I wanted to become a public speaker and mentor for young Black women on financial literacy, career advice, and social etiquette I was asked “How the f*** are you going to do that?” and “What makes you think that you are qualified?”
Seven months later, over 140,000 people seem to find me more than qualified. My TikTok grew to over 100K in 5 months. My Instagram grew to almost 10,000 with little effort in just 3 months and my Youtube over 1,000 followers after my first post.
Looks like I’m pretty damn qualified.
Here’s the thing, I don’t listen. I don’t listen to a lot of people and to them that might be a problem. But for me, that is my golden ticket.
To me, their problem is bigger— they see limits that I do not see. And that is their loss because the only limit you have is the one that you set yourself. If you believe that you can do anything, then you can do anything and it is as simple as that. You can lie to yourself and say that you believe it, or you can start taking action in order to truly believe it and I can share more of my thoughts on that another time.
For now, here are some tools that you can use in your professional life to become that person that separates from the herd of disbelievers that think whatever doesn’t fall into their lap isn’t worth the extra effort, free only to my beloved subscribers: My Career Guide. This is a living document that I will continue to update as your questions continue to roll in.
If I listened to the dozens of people who once told me I shouldn’t expect butterfly outcomes, then neither of us would be reading this thread. Inspiring each other. Your feedback inspires my content, so please subscribe and give me more.
Thank you for your comments, dms, and emails I’ve read (and try to respond to) every last one. <3
